An intaglio technique where the image is created by direct drawing or exposing a photographic image onto a ground applied to steel, copper or zinc plates and then submerging in a mordant bath. Prints are made using an etching press, which pushes the paper into the etched recesses and lifts the ink out of the incised surface.
The etched prints by Dynamo Works are created using the photopolymer process these are also called gravure etch.
Letterpress
A field of printing that incorporate handset metal or wooden type, we use Adana, Vandercook and Platen presses.
Limited Edition
An edition consists of a number of prints produced from the same plates or screens. The prints are as close to being identical as possible and have been published at the same time. Original prints are usually signed and numbered as a limited edition. A print with the number 3/20 is the 3rd print in an edition of 20.
Screen Printing
In screenprinting a fine fabric mesh is stretched tightly over a frame. Traditionally meshes were made of silk, hence the phrase 'silk-screen', although modern meshes are made from a tougher polyester mesh. Images are made by blocking areas of this mesh with stencils and then are printed by pushing inks through the screen mesh using a squeegee. The simplest type of stencil can be made from cut or torn paper applied to the screen mesh. Another process uses light-sensitive emulsion to create stencils, which can provide greater detail and a wider variety of marks and textures.
For printing, the screen is attached to a printing bed and coloured ink is pushed trough the mesh onto the paper using a squeegee blade. Each layer of colour is printed individually with a new stencil created for each colour.
